An inside update on services provided by the University of Illinois Foundation
A Message from Jim Moore, President/CEO University of Illinois Foundation
UIF Community Forum
I think we would all agree that it is impossible to appropriately describe the impact the University of Illinois has on our local, national and global communities. However, because we experience the excellence of the University System on a daily basis, at times it is also easy to be a bit cavalier in our appreciation for all that the University does.
In an effort to help educate and inform our communities about some of the amazing work being done on our campuses, the UI Foundation has established a new Community Forum that will be launching in Champaign-Urbana next month. Details about the upcoming Forum are provided below. I hope this will prove to be the beginning of a series of events and programming that will allow our business and community leaders to become even more proud of “their” University.
For more information about the Forum and to offer thoughts about future topics for consideration, please contact, Donna Greene, UI Foundation, Director of Community Relations.

University of Illinois Foundation
The University of Illinois Foundation is pleased to share its first-ever Community Forum has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Champaign Country Club from 7:30am—9:00am. This inaugural forum will be focused on Health Innovation and will highlight the powerful health sciences ecosystem at Illinois.
This by-invitation-only event has been intentionally designed to attract local business and thought leaders who are centers of influence, high-capacity, philanthropic partners or business strategists who can help further the advancement of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois System. While the University’s reach is global, we are striving to demonstrate—with real, tangible manifestations of the voices of academic and alumni leaders—how the impact of the work from within and due to the University of Illinois is inspiring and relevant to those who call Champaign-Urbana home.
The full invitation list and event details are available in TED under the events module. If you find upon review you have suggested additions to the list, please contact us at email@example.com as we are happy to include those you feel would both gain and add value to the program. This group of individuals is being managed as a TED committee and searchable in the committees module as Champaign Urbana Community Partners.
All questions, comments, and feedback may be directed to Donna Greene, UIF Director of Community Relations, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks so much to you for your partnership!
Review of Users' Access in Progress
In consultation with the Executive Operations Team (EOT—UIF President, University VCs for Advancement, UIF Sr. VPs), the Foundation is reviewing security and access roles in TED and other UIF systems with a goal of managing users’ access to sensitive data more effectively and efficiently. At the end of the review, the UIF will propose to EOT changes to some users’ access, particularly in regard to plans, interactions, opportunities, giving, and marketing efforts. It is anticipated some users will no longer be able to view data they currently can view. Early in 2020, the UIF will begin communicating with University CAOs about proposed changes for specific users.
Progress will be reported each month in Advancement Insider, so please stay tuned. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tyler Fitch at email@example.com or 217-300-6090.
Online Giving Enhancement - Blackbaud Checkout and Digital Wallets!
The UIF Online Giving Payment page is now utilizing Blackbaud’s new Checkout experience. Checkout is a mobile responsive payment form that provides a secure and simplified payment experience. Once the donor and gift information are complete and the Continue button clicked, the Checkout form renders on top of the page to enter credit card information and securely complete the donation.
Blackbaud’s Checkout also allows for the use of digital wallets (MasterPass, Visa Checkout, and Apple Pay). The digital wallet functionality is now available on UIF Online Giving Payment pages and membership forms. (Note: Apple Pay option will be available only on Apple Pay enabled devices)
Year-End Reminders and Updates!
From the Office of Gift Planning & Trust Services
3 IDEAS FOR CLOSING GIFTS BEFORE YEAR-END
- Suggest donors give appreciated stock held for more than one year whether they itemize deductions or not. They will still avoid paying tax on capital gains, and if they do itemize, they should be able to deduct fair market value.
- If your donor is 70 ½+, remind them about a charitable IRA rollover.
- Does your donor have appreciated assets but also is concerned about income? Call your Gift Planning Liaison for ideas!
As we approach the end of the year, we also want to highlight a few practical reminders:
If you have gift documents that you will need to record gifts prior to the calendar year-end, please get those requests submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you have the necessary details. Late November and early December can be very busy, so we appreciate all of your efforts to manage the year-end rush.
Please note the following key dates when working with donors on year-end gifts to ensure ample time for transfer:
- Gifts by Mail: The postmark determines the official date of a gift that is mailed. Therefore, it is conceivable that a donor could mail their gift on Tuesday, December 31st and secure a 2019 gift date. However, we would not recommend this because any number of things may happen on that last day to jeopardize the postmark actually being applied. To be safe, donors should mail their gifts a few days before the end of the year.
- Stock Gifts: Can generally be done in a few business days. To be safe, it is advised that any stock gifts be executed by the middle of December to ensure a 2019 gift date.
- Mutual Fund Gifts: Can take significantly longer to process than a stock gift. If a donor plans to make a gift of mutual funds, please be sure to contact UIF by the first week of December to help ensure ample time to complete the transfer.
- Real Estate Gifts: If you intend for a property gift to close this calendar year, the discussion should be well underway. Contact Gift Planning immediately if you anticipate a donor wishing to do a transfer by year-end.
- Charitable IRA Rollover Gifts: Note that Charitable IRA Rollover Gifts must transfer directly from the donor’s IRA account to UIF, and must be out of the donor’s IRA account by December 31st. We suggest you encourage your donors to start this process in early December at the latest to ensure the transfer occurs in a timely manner.

Name Tags for Multi-Level Events
Now In a multi-level event, when you enter in a new Name Tag Name or information in the Additional Notes fields, the data you enter will filter down to the sub events for which that individual is registered. The data will only filter from the parent event down to the sub events, in a top down, one way fashion. This functionality will only work for new information entered, not an edit on a previous entry.
New Participation Report Suite
UI Reporting Tab
We are introducing the Participation Report under the Annual Giving category in this new release. This report will count living alumni, solicitable alumni, solicited alumni and will calculate the percentage of those that are donors to their university, to their advancement unit, to other universities, other advancement units and the whole University of Illinois System. The detailed breakdown will count alumni in various demographic areas like age, gender, degree level attained, etc
Active Pipeline Report Suite
The Active Pipeline Report Suite has a new report addition for the UIC Advancement team called UIC Benefiting Unit report. This report, for the selected Unit, will display opportunities that have been entered by the unit’s advancement team as well the Central advancement team. The report will use the Expected Commitment Date entered in TED to list the opportunities that fall in the date range selected when running the report.
The following updates have also been made:
- Employing Unit report (for UIC only): the report criteria has been updated to use the Expected Commitment Date entered on the opportunity to list opportunities that fall in the selected date range.
- Search Fundraiser prompt: Updated the search functionality for faster return of results.
Event Statistics Summary Report
The Event Statistics Summary Report are modified to enable users to narrow down events by date before searching on a name. Users are still able to search by name without using the date function or search by date without using the name function.
Monthly Faculty Staff Data
November Faculty Staff data has been loaded into the University Appointments area under the Relationships tab in TED. Monthly Faculty Staff data is pulled from Banner on the 10th and loaded into TED on the 3rd weekend of each month.
New Phone Contacts
UIF Advancement Services and UIF Annual Giving partnered together this past year to evaluate a few vendors on obtaining new phone numbers for lost constituents. Three different vendors were provided three different selections of records to obtain new landline or cell phone numbers. UIF Annual Giving then applied a calling campaign for those returned numbers and provide UIF Advancement Services enough data to make a decision on the top competing vendor. AlumniFinder was the vendor that rose to the top in the quality of numbers received back from a small selection of records and the number of dollars that were able to be raised in those small calling campaigns. Therefore UIF AIMS and UIF Annual Giving have recently purchased 136k new phone numbers from AlumniFinder. These numbers were collected on constituents that currently have no callable phone number for in TED and had not been contacted since July 2018. Currently UIF AIMS is working on loading these new numbers into TED for a future calling campaign. There will be the potential of sending another list of records to AlumniFinder after the new year depending on the results of this first round. Please conact UIF AIMS for any questions regarding this data.
ChatBot is Live!!!
The ChatBot launched on November 4th on all pages of uif.uillinois.edu and in the online giving process. Thank you to all of the Advancement community who interacted with the ChatBot in testing and provided feedback and suggestions.
Many donors have interacted with the BOT, from as close as Urbana, IL and as far away as Japan. The most popular question for the BOT has been how to make a credit card gift. We have also had a donor interact with the live chat, and successfully have an online giving concern resolved.
If there are suggestions for additional questions that can be incorporated into the BOT to help better serve donors, please continue to share feedback with email@example.com.
