Available Part-Time Job: Archiving

On-campus hourly position for a student familiar with Adobe Lightroom, who is interested in building an archive for the Illinois State Water Survey. Gain professional work experience building a database of historical information.

Tasks:

  • Scan historic photos, documents, and diagrams and using Adobe lightroom (the majority of the work will focus on scanning the materials).
    • Numerous slides to scan and catalog, and a number of files from graphic artists that used to do newsletters and diagrams for technical reports.
    • Many photos from the 60’s and 70’s are in those files, and the groundwater records have photos going back to the 1890’s.
  • Help build an archive of past staff, projects, and programs that the Illinois State Water Survey has records for, going back 100 years.
  • Cataloging the scans, adding descriptions in some cases, adding tags to the scan metadata to provide future search capabilities.
  • Working with staff who have slides and photos of projects and fieldstaff to identify the project information, funders, staff names, and tags to link to areas and research types.
  • Work with some alumni, some who have been retired for nearly 20 years, to help with the identification of staff from the late 60’s to the 80’s (meeting with the alumni to create that information to be stored in the metadata for the scans).

Requirements:
Experience with Adobe Lightroom and scanning materials.

Self-motivated and able to complete a project.
