Students having fun during International Education Week

Dear all,

Welcome to the last week of classes!  Join us this week and next semester to celebrate International Education every day.  For more photos of the many special events during last week's extravaganza click here and select the event:  East Asian Calligraphy?  Drawing class in French?  Global internships?

LCLC's My UIC Language Story showcases the wonderful richness of UIC's multi-lingual and diverse students, faculty, staff and alumni.  Share your language story!
UIC students, staff, faculty, and alums: what's your language story? How have you experienced the languages you speak and understand?

--as a native speaker of something other than English (bilingual, multilingual)
--as a language learner at UIC or elsewhere (any language, including English, anywhere, including Study Abroad)
--as the child/family member of a multilingual family
--what language(s) do you use at work? at home? when volunteering? with your kids/parents?
--any story about your experiences with language speaking or learning that you want to share

The survey is here and also embedded in our webpage, lclc.uic.edu under Events.

LCLC Language Peer Tutoring is going strong:  check out one of the apprentice Spanish peer tutors on the job in the photo above.  We also peer tutor in French, German, and Italian, all at the BLP level only.  If you have strong students in your upper-level classes in these languages, please encourage them to apply to be an apprentice peer tutor next semester (and eventually a paid peer tutor, or earn UIC internship credits): Click here for application.

LCLC closes during winter break, so if you are planning tech in your Spring 2020 classes, contact us now!  lclc@uic.edu
Best wishes for finals week to all.

UIC LCLC social media! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Facebook page and Instagram and Twitter feeds. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings. Promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your conversation hour or film series.

Weekly Workshop: Does your rubric add up?
'Tis the season to evaluate your rubrics for next semester! If paper rubrics are still your go-to, consider building them into Blackboard assignments instead. Need help figuring out how to create Blackboard rubrics? Stop by the LCLC this week and we will show you how create rubrics from your gradebook or when setting up an assessment. We will help you navigate the different types of rubrics that Blackboard allows you to create. In addition, we will work with you to tailor your rubric to the desired outcomes of course assignments. The advantages of building rubrics into assignments are many: They help instructors maintain consistency and they make criteria available right to the students' fingertips. So bring your paper rubrics and your fresh ideas, and together let's see if your Spring 2020 rubric adds up.

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu
