Caterpillar's commitment to Gies, University of Illinois
When it comes to continued engagement with Gies College of Business and the University of Illinois, few do it as effectively as Caterpillar Inc. The Deerfield, Illinois-based construction equipment manufacturer and the University of Illinois formed a strategic alliance, which now involves approximately 10 major committees covering everything from engineering to business. With more than 1,100 University of Illinois graduates working at Caterpillar today, the alliance provides a space for interested alumni to engage with the College and the University. One particular alliance committee works closely with Gies to discover ways to positively impact students and prepare them to become business leaders of tomorrow. READ MORE

Lichtenwalter (FIN '63) supports Gies through planned giving
After a successful career in insurance, Gies alumnus Gary Lichtenwalter (FIN ’63) and his wife Daylene decided to give back to Gies College of Business in a unique way. They set up a charitable remainder trust (CRT) with the University of Illinois Foundation in order to support scholarships for Gies students.

“It’s extremely rewarding to get a heartfelt letter from a student who couldn’t afford to go to college without the scholarship," said Lichtenwalter. "For someone who is considering a charitable remainder trust, I’d tell them they’re not giving everything away now; they’ll earn income off the trust for a lifetime. I can’t stress enough how happy I am with my decision.” READ MORE

In social missions, low pay augurs high performance
You get what you pay for. It is a classic piece of popular and business wisdom, invoked in hiring and pay decisions across the length and breadth of the economy. But for many enterprises, according to new research co-authored by Gies professors Clara Chen and Laura Wang, not only is this saying doubtful but the reverse is likely to be the case – specifically in organizations that have an overriding social mission.
