Illinois' economy grew in November, according to the University of Illinois Flash Index, a monthly economic indicator designed by economist Fred Geirtz of the U of I System's Institute of Government and Public Affairs. Read more here.
On Jan. 16, the U of I Board of Trustees approved the extension of President Killeen's contract through 2024. Since his appointment in 2015, the system has seen a nearly 14 percent enrollment increase, instituted a five-year tuition freeze for in-state students, increased research funding and pioneered new innovation initiatives, including the Discovery Partners Institute and the Illinois Innovation Network. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst were awarded $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation to research and improve the user experience in virtual reality videos. The research by computer science Professor Klara Nahrstedt and her Massachusetts colleagues will focus on three areas: Creating navigation graphs to combat motion sickness in users, developing a scalable distribution model and improving the quality of user experience by creating metrics and evaluation methods to assess cyber sickness. If the researchers are successful, their work will be groundbreaking in the world of 360-degree VR videos. Read more here.
On Dec. 5, Senior Director of State Relations Jennifer Creasey and Associate Director of Advocacy Marissa Brewer made a presentation on student advocacy initiatives at the Higher Education Government Relations Conference in New Orleans. They highlighted initiatives at all three U of I System universities and discussed their recent activities in Springfield and Washington, D.C.
Barb Wilson executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs for the U of I System, sent a letter to the Illinois congressional delegation offering input on H.R. 4674, the College Affordability Act of 2019, legislation that would reauthorize the Higher Education Act. The letter highlights provisions that the U of I System endorses as well as provisions that raise concerns or questions.
On Jan. 14, local legislators gathered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for an annual Legislative Kick-off Breakfast. Chancellor Robert Jones opened conversation by discussing recent accomplishments and future goals for the university. The event was followed by a tour of the new Henry Dale and Betty Smith Football Center in Champaign.
