Tom Irwin '08 LAS, MA '10 LAS
Tom Irwin, a sixth-generation Sangamon County resident from rural Pleasant Plains, performs original songs about his life and where he’s lived it. During his thirty-five year (and counting) career in making music, Irwin has received the only Downtown Springfield Music Legend award, opened for Willie Nelson & Family at the 2001 Illinois State Fair and been voted by readers of Illinois Times as a Best of in several categories, including Songwriter for 2018 and 2019. He plays around 200 dates annually, in the area and traveling throughout the USA and has released 12 full-length albums including All That Love in 2017 and Sangamon Songs in 2012. A recent collaboration with playwright John W. Arden produced Sangamon Songs: A Musical Play, a theatrical show based on the album which debuted in Sangamon County at the UIS Performing Arts Center in November of 2019. His column on the local music scene, Now Playing has been printed weekly in Illinois Times since 2000. He resides in Springfield with his wife Theresa O’Hare.
