Peer Tutor Ariana and Last week's conversation hours

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

The 2020 Language Symposium (co-sponsored by LCLC!)  is coming up in April, and there is still time to submit a proposal! The topic is Peer Collaboration and Second Language Learning: Innovations and Reflections, and the proposal deadline is February 15. Remember that it is FREE for LCSL graduate students and faculty, so register now!  More information here: https://las.depaul.edu/academics/modern-languages/about/events/chicago-language-symposium/Pages/call-for-papers.aspx

My UIC Language Story would love to hear about your language story. Last week Rachel talked about her love for Lithuanian (she's now in Lithuanian 102), and today Irma, emerita professor from the School of Education, shared about her move from Puerto Rico to the US and a child and how she's now learning Mandarin!  Read all about, it see their photos, and submit stories here: https://lclc.uic.edu/event/uic-language-stories/

A big crowd showed up for Japanese Karaoke last week, and fun and fresh popcorn were had by all.  Send your students and come yourself - we host lots of weekly events, from Spanish Conversation Hour to German Sprachcafe.  Here's our event schedule: https://lclc.uic.edu/event/schedule-of-events-in-gh-308/

Our workshop this week is PowerPoint Design Feature: join us Wednesday from 11am-12pm or Friday from 10-11am in 301 GH, or email us to set up an appointment to talk about this or any other tech pedagogy for your current and future classes. LCLC@uic.edu

The third LCSL 505 session of the semester is this week, Friday 14 February from 3:00-4:45pm in GH 304, and all grad students and faculty members are welcome to attend. The topic of this session will be Technology in a face-to-face class, so feel free to stop by and discover new ways to incorporate technical tools into your language classroom.

Weekly Workshop: Making your Point even more Powerful.
Although Powerpoint is one of the most widely-used visual classroom tools, determining the best ways to put design in the service of learning can be a major challenge. Do you find yourself looking for effective ways to teach verb conjugations, step-by-step? To demonstrate sentence-building techniques? How about to parse vocabularly and create better opportunities for interpretation of texts? This week, we will take a look at how to use the Powerpoint design feature not just to make information visually appealing, but to help you highlight meaningful relationships within your content that will make your points resonate with your students. We will explore how you can revamp bullet points, tables, vocabulary lists, and diagrams to make them more dynamic and clearer. Bring the images and content for your next lesson and we will workshop strategies for effective design, agenda-setting, and easy navigation. We hope to see you there!

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu
