We invite Black women students to participate in a collaborative art project that explores the stories that Black women tell about their hair. Over the Spring 2020 semester, each participant will work with a fiber artist to design and stitch an individual quilt square while learning about Black women’s quilting traditions and engaging in conversation about what love, joy, family, politics, trauma, fashion, and resistance have to do with Black hair.

Financial Aid Opportunities for Undocumented and Trans Students
The RISE Act application is now live! This new funding allows undocumented students who are Illinois residents and some transgender students (who were not previously eligible) to apply for UIC institutional aid starting this spring and for MAP grants plus institutional aid starting in the fall. Eligible UIC Students or new freshmen or transfer students who will likely be attending in fall should apply soon. The Office of Diversity is offering workshops in January and February to help with your application.
New Student Org: A Space of Our Own
A group made by and for Black women to connect, care, share, and thrive together in higher education. This new group is a way to build a social community, share your experiences as Black women in higher education, and engage in meetings and events that explore cultural texts and media that speak to what it means to be both Black and women in the world. Freedom Riders is the powerful, harrowing, and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders met with racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.
New Student Org: African Film Society
African Film Society is a new student organization that seeks to be inaugurated during the 2020-21 academic year. Our mission is to combat the powerful cultural imperialism that negatively distorts African representation in modern-day media. Through regular film screenings and subsequent dialogue, we seek to counteract the stereotypical, prevailing narratives about African people across the diaspora. We are currently seeking to fill four vacant positions in our executive board. Students of any major may apply for one of the positions by filling out a form here by March 1, 2020.
NEW Leadership Illinois
The 2020 program is an all-expenses paid, bi-partisan program designed to increase women's representation in all elements of public life, including elected office. The program includes leadership education, hands-on training in public policy, and networkinng opportunities with leaders from every level of government. The program will be held May 18-22 in Springfield, IL. Applications due March 2, 2020.
