Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

You are invited to celebrate Mother Language Day at the LCLC Tuesday February 25, 12:00-2:00 in Grant Hall 308 Come share your story about your experiences with language--as a child, a traveler, a language learner, a language teacher...  Our event brings together staff, students, faculty, and alumni to honor the fabulous linguistic and cultural diversity of UIC.  Listen to others' stories, and share your own.   Can't make it tomorrow?  Read stories and submit your own on our new UIC Language Stories page--and come to our next event, date TBD!

Whoo hoo, 16 new Peer Tutors are on the job, serving Spanish, French, German, and Italian 100-level students!  Watch a very short video of a typical session here!  Meet the tutors and send your own 100-level students to LCLC Peer Tutoring.  Drop-in hours available 9-5 M-F, 301 Grant Hall.

Weekly Workshop: Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
While face-to-face class meetings are always ideal, sometimes geography or circumstances make a full meeting difficult or impossible. Maybe you are out-of-town, or maybe you want to include students who attend another U of I campus. Thankfully, Blackboard has a solution for your predicament which can help you have sucessful class sessions even if everyone is not in the same room! With the proper equipment, you can have remote class sessions using the same Blackboard system and credentials that you (most likely) utilize for other digital teaching needs. It is not difficult to incorporate visuals (e.g. through Powerpoint) via screen-sharing, and you can invite guest viewers and presenters or have people call in (audio only) as well! All these are great reasons why Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is a great way to organize and conduct remote class sessions.

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu

Weekly Article:

PARLEZ-VOUS FRANCAIS? MAYBE NOT IF YOU'RE A BOY

"Girls are more than twice as likely as boys to pass a GCSE in a modern foreign language, a report suggests.

"Just about 38% of boys in England took a foreign language at GCSE in 2018, compared with about 50% of girls, a report for the British Council says.

"Using statistical modelling, the Education Policy Institute study found when factors like background and ability were accounted for, boys were 2.17 times less likely to succeed."
