Presenters at Mother Language Day event last week.

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

At the LCLC Mother Language Day celebration, students and faculty told stories about the languages that shape their lives, their parents' lives, and their childrens' lives: Beja (South Sudan), Korean, Quechua, German, Nahuatl, Russian, Hungarian, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and more. Read about the many languages of UIC staff, students, faculty, and alumni on our UIC Language Stories page! There you'll see the Bulgarian/French connection, the advantages of being trilingual in Arabic, Spanish, and English, the discovery that your family has been hiding its German ancestry, how a move from Puerto Rico inspired a life-long career in education, and much more.  We welcome stories from language learners too - did you grow up speaking English and fall in love with Japanese?  Did a movie about Italy inspire you? Let us know by writing your story here: https://lclc.uic.edu/uic-language-stories/

LCLC Peer Tutors are visiting Spanish, French, German, and Italian classrooms and spreading the word around campus about free language tutoring in Grant Hall.  We're putting up flyers all around campus and visiting dorms and learning centers, so please help us spread the word to our French, German, Italian, and Spanish 100-level students: FREE TUTORING. Meet our tutors - they are so eager to work with our students! We'll soon be sending information about how to apply to be a peer tutor for upper-level students. (Internships and paid tutoring also available!)

SPECIAL EVENTS in 308 Grant Hall this week: we have French Cooking Class on Tuesday, March 3 from 1:00-3:00 (all welcome, all ingredients provided!) and Balkan Dance Class: Serbian and Greek dancing this Thursday, March 5 from 5:00-6:30. All are welcome to attend, music and refreshments will be provided: you do the dancing! Everyone is invited to join in for both events - cook, eat, dance, sing!

Weekly Article:

MINDS MATTER: PSYCHOLOGY OF LANGUAGE LEARNING

"'It's all in the mind!' - How ture when it comes to learning a foreign language. Every teacher knows that you can have the best resources in the world, but if the learner is not in the right frame of mind to engage with the new langugae and the use of opportunities before them, then they are unlikely to do so. There are all kinds of reasons why a learner may put obstacles in their own way or simply avoid engaging, but many of these reasons often lie in how learners view themselves, their competences, and their relationship to the language, classroom, peers, and the teacher.

"Our psychologies are complex, and care must be taken not to oversimplify, but I have chosen to focus on 5 key areas of learner psychology which I think can make a difference to learning and which we as language educators can work on developing. Introducing the two Gs and the three Cs!"
