U of I System Day at the Capitol
The University of Illinois System gathered in Springfield on Wednesday, February 26 for the 11th annual U of I System Day at the Capitol. Over 200 students and alumni spoke with state legislators about the importance of investing in Higher Education and the impact of the U of I System across the state. Legislators were excited to meet with representatives from the three universities and the health system.
U of I System Higher Education Rally
Advocates gathered in the rotunda of the Illinois Capitol for a U of I System rally. Participants heard from State Senator Scott Bennett, State Senator Michael E. Hastings, State Senator Steve McClure, State Senator Jim Oberweis, State Representative Carol Ammons, State Representative Bob Morgan, State Representative Sue Scherer, State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, and University of Illinois-Springfield student, Eric Loera. The speakers commented on the importance of Illinois' investment in higher education and their own experiences with the University of Illinois System.
Illinois Public Universities Higher Education Reception
On Wednesday evening, alumni from each of Illinois' public universities gathered in the Governor's Mansion for a Public Higher Education Reception. Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and Deputy Governor of Education, Jesse Ruiz, candidly voiced their support for public higher education in Illinois. The reception focused on celebrating recent successes for Illinois' higher education system and was organized by the Advocacy Consortium of Public Illinois Alumni Associations. The public universities in attendance were: Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Governor's State University, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Springfield, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Western Illinois University.
U of I System Advocates Luncheon
Before students and alumni began meeting with legislators, they gathered in the Howlett building for a luncheon. There they heard from U of I System President, Tim Killeen and Senior Director of State Relations, Jennifer Creasey, about the initiatives of the U of I System. Deputy Governor of Education, Jesse Ruiz, was awarded the first U of I System Award for Advocacy for his support of higher education.
U of I System President Speaks at Senate Appropriations Hearing
On Wednesday, February 26, U of I System President, Tim Killeen, along with U of I System Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Barb Wilson, answered questions concerning the U of I System at the Senate Appropriations II hearing. The University of Illinois at Chicago Chancellor, Michael Amiridis, the University of Illinois at Springfield Chancellor, Susan Koch and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chancellor, Robert Jones, were in attendance to answer further questions about university-specific initiatives.

On Tuesday, March 3 UI Health will have a small lobby day at the state capitol. On March 4, UI Health will host a Legislator Breakfast along with UI System President Killeen. At the end of the month, the U of I System Caucus will participate in the Prairie Research Institute dinner, hosted by State Representative Carol Ammons.
