Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

Virtual Office Hours with Google Meet. Need to set up online exchanges with your students or even between students? Google Meet, available to all UIC faculty and students, makes it easy. On your phone or on a computer, the Google Meet app lets you have synchronous video meetings, share your screen, and even record the session. To learn more about Meet or if you have other questions about virtual office hours, stop by one of our workshops this week or email us at lclc@uic.edu to set up an appointment. You can also find out more here: Google Hangouts Meet.

All LCSL instructors are invited to attend this week's LCSL 505 session.
We'll be talking and learning about technology in an online class. LCSL 505 meets from 3-4:45 this Friday, March 17th online.

LCLC Peer tutoring in French, German, Italian, and Spanish: our many undergrad tutors are serving BLP students. Read a tutor blog, meet our tutors, view the schedule.

UIC Language StorieS: read the latest stories here. Rayna talks about learning to value her Palestinian/Mexian background and Kei explains why she is teaching her sons Japanese. Tell your own story here.

Special events: Last week's Balkan dance class and French cooking class drew lots of people, students and staff alike. How about dropping into this week's special event on Le Zapping? It's a short compliation of what happened on French TV the day before. Often mixing humor with hard news, it's a fun way to tap into the French vibe at any given time. Join us on Thursday, March 12, 3-4 in 308 Grant Hall. More special events here.

Virutal Office Hours with Google Meet. While face-to-face meetings or drop-in hours are the best ways to connect with your students, sometimes circumstances, such as inclement weather or quarantines, make traveling to campus impossible. The good news is that with Google Meet, a tool already available to all UIC faculty and students, you can hold virtual meetings in the palm of your hand. On your phone or on a computer, the Google Meet app lets you have synchronous video meetings, share your screen, and even record the session. If you want to learn more about Meet or have other questions about virtual office hours, stop by one of our workshops this week.

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu

Weekly Article:

CPS INVESTING IN SPANISH AND THE BENEFITS OF DUAL-LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

"More than 400 million people in the world speak Spanish. Many schools nationwide are capitalizing on that and investing in dual-language programs.
"In Chicago, kids are starting as early as pre-K and by the time they graduate high school, hundreds are earning the seal of biliteracy.
"That seal was first kicked off in California in 2012. Jorge Macias, who runs the CPS Office of Language and Cultural Education, said that it can get students early college credit."
