Club Spotlight: Vermilion County 4-H Federation

Federation collects donations

The Vermilion County 4-H Federation normally sponsors a county-wide community service opportunity each year. With the stay at home order in place, they were tasked with coming up with a way to give back to their community safely. They decided they would request face masks and puzzle books to be donated and dropped off in a collection box at the Vermilion Extension office. Through June and July, they collected these items and they will be donated to a local nursing home.

2020 STEM Challenge 4-H CS Pathway Teen Leader Registration

Would you like to receive free STEM Challenge 2020 (formerly NYSD) kits? National 4-H Council is inviting all 4-H CS Pathway teens, which includes all IL 4-H teens, to register for a free kit.

They encourage teams of at least two teens and an adult adviser to receive training, plan, and host their own STEM Challenge events in their community in the month October. In exchange for free kits and training, teens will share a report on the impact of their events.

The top three groups who makes the biggest impact in their community will be awarded a $1000 grant to further their local CS program. Impact can be defined as the largest number of STEM Challenge events implemented, total number of youths reached, or most innovative or creative partnerships. This year registration will be capped at 200 registrants. To get kits shipped in time for a Teen STEM Challenge Unboxing, registration must be complete by August 14th, 2020. Register your group here

State Fair Information

The Illinois 4-H State General Project Show is an opportunity for youth to be virtually judged on project work, as well as receive valuable feedback from experts which allow them to increase their knowledge and gain mastery in a project area. This year youth will be virtually judged during one of three weeks in August.

Assigned County Virtual Judging Dates

Week 1: Aug. 3-9  Ford and Vermilion

Week 2: Aug. 10-16 Iroquois

Week 3: Aug. 19-23 Champaign

Illinois 4-H State General Project Show Selection and Recognition
-All entries will be judged through FairEntry.
-Only youth selected in their county competition advance to the state competition. County delegates have been assigned to one of three show weeks (as described above).
-All qualifying youth will be judged, receive feedback, and be recognized for their accomplishment as a state fair delegate.
-Each week, a champion and reserve champion medallion will be awarded in each project class using a common scoresheet. Note: the 10-point scale and numerical scoring system used in 2019 will not be applied to the FairEntry version of this event in 2020.
-Judges are given discretion to identify additional “Inspire” awards for work they wish to highlight or acknowledge.
-All state general project show medallions and ribbons will be sent to counties in the fall for distribution to youth.

Ideas for Virtual Club Meetings

Even though restrictions on club meetings are slowly being lifted, many of you may still wish to meet with your members virtually. We would like to provide you with some resources to help with some new ideas.

Resources Included:

Vermilion County 4-H Federation also participated in a virtual escape room during their last meeting. We used this one and found it to be somewhat challenging but entertaining for a group of high school-age members. There are plenty of other free escape rooms you can find through a Google search. We recommend trying them out before using them in a meeting to gauge the length of time needed and the difficulty.

Awards, Records, and More!

Club Recognition Award

Is your 4-H Club doing outstanding work in the areas of Community Service, Leadership or Project Mastery?. If so, you should apply for the Illinois 4-H Club Award! Clubs receiving this award will receive a $75 cash incentive and an award certificate. This is also a great tool to set goals and plan for the upcoming 4-H year. This application can be found @ https://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/awards.

Important Change to Record Books

Our unit will be utilizing the Experience Award application to replace record books this year. Unfortunately, the changes we asked for from Zingbooks weren’t made due to all of the issues they faced during the migration from a normal work setting. The coders and staff at Zingbooks are working on those changes, but it won’t be ready for us to use in the 2019-2020 records/awards season. 4-H members who have adopted Zingbooks can continue to put items there, just know that is not the way we are going to go for this year.
