Updates from the YED Committee  |  June 2021

Scholarship

One of the initiatives of the YED is to sustain a scholarship fund in which young alumni can support current students. COVID-19 has shaken up the engineering industry in many ways over the past year, with many companies still assessing their long-term plans for jobs and internships. This has left some current students without a summer job to help supplement the cost of their education. We want to encourage you to consider making a donation to the YED Scholarship Fund to help out our students during these challenging times.

Gifts to the YED Scholarship fund are being accepted in the form of both one-time and recurring payments (for example, a $60 gift to the fund could be made by making a single payment in that amount up front or by making payments of $5/month over a period of one year). Even small gifts to the fund will add up to make a big difference in the lives of current CEE at Illinois students!
More information on how you can add your support to the YEDScholarship fund can be found at cee.illinois.edu/YED.

Networking

The Networking Committee previously shared helpful work from home tips including improving your work-life balance. This month, we would like to share an interesting Forbes article about how our personal and professional networks have shrunk during the pandemic and ways we can work to prevent further shrinking and continue expanding our networks.

In addition, the Networking Committee is looking forward to planning in-person networking events later in 2021, so stay on the lookout for more information!

Career Development

The YED Professional Development committee has recently added a Licensure Exam Advice section to our webpage. If you're planning to take an exam soon, check out advice from other alumni who recently took and passed their exams here!

We are also still collecting advice and encourage anyone who has taken an exam recently to contribute their experience through our survey.

Mentoring

Congratulations to the spring 2021 graduates! We wish you all the best as you enter the workforce and begin your careers. We hope that you have signed up for the mentorship program and taken advantage of having experienced CEE alumni as mentors.

For those who have signed up for the program, we are reviewing your applications and we are excited to kick off the next mentorship round in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for mentorship pairing emails.

If you missed the deadline for this round, no worries! We are systematically setting up the ground for the next round. We will share details in a future newsletter.
