Class Spotlight

MACS 166: Contemporary Media Literacy

Develops critical media production skills to assess the importance of new media in contemporary culture. The course emphasizes both social and technical aspects of media. As part of the course, students prepare their own media and evaluate current media literacy projects.

ADV 290: Data Literacy

Becoming fluent with data is a sought-after skill, for any major and in any career. Addressing this need, this course provides hands-on- training on fundamentals of data exploration (asking the right questions), data gathering and data analysis (understanding and describing the situation). Also emphasized is the art of communicating with data (telling a compelling story through data visualizations). We emphasize the practical rather than the technical and mathematical, so liberal arts and media students will find this course far more relevant and accessible than comparable ones in Computer Science or in Stats. Students will learn how to find datasets in online archives and repositories and introduced to the commonly used software packages and techniques (spreadsheets, text analytics, social computing). The course also covers issues such as data ethics and privacy. No prior knowledge of research methods, statistics or programming is required.

JOUR 361: Classics of Sports Journalism

Students in this course will read, view, analyze and discuss long-form sports journalism. Some of the books, articles and documentaries are considered classics of the form; others may be fairly recent but on their way to classic status. All will represent varied approaches to sports journalism across media platforms.
