YED Newsletter | January 2021

Happy New Year CEE Alumni!

On behalf the entire YED Board, I want to wish all of our young alumni a Happy New Year! For most, 2020 was a challenging year both personally and professionally. While the start of the new year is symbolic of a fresh start, most of us still have a long road ahead before things are “back to normal.” I sincerely hope that you are all staying healthy – physically, mentally and emotionally – as we all continue to adapt to the ever-changing world around us.
The YED committee chairs are working hard to make sure that we can offer helpful resources and networking opportunities for CEE young alumni and students in 2021 and beyond. Please see below for the latest updates regarding our mentoring program, scholarship program, career development resources, and networking events. We are looking forward to another year of connecting with you!

One of the initiatives of the YED is to sustain a scholarship fund in which young alumni can support current students. We hope to award our first scholarship this spring.

Gifts to the YED Scholarship fund are being accepted in the form of both one-time and recurring payments (for example, a $60 gift to the fund could be made by making a single payment in that amount up front or by making payments of $5/month over a period of one year).

To find out more about the impact of the YED Scholarship fund can be found at cee.illinois.edu/YED.

The Networking Committee has worked to help our young alumni adapt to the challenges we've all faced over the past year, especially with the changes to remote working and virtual networking. We are able to successfully host our first virtual happy hour in September. The Networking Committee is working hard to plan exciting virtual events this year. We hope that we are able to return to in-person networking events later in 2021.

In 2020, the Career Development committee published a survey asking what resources young alumni would find most useful for advancing their careers. One of the top responses was a compilation of professional development resources, including advice on seeking licensure and higher education. The website was launched in December 2020. Please take a look, add your story to the "Higher Education" page, review exam guidance on the "Licensure" page, and use the "Contact Us" page to let us know what you like and what additions or improvements you'd like to see.

In the upcoming year, we plan to provide more specific resources for those seeking professional licensure, including recommended study materials, Q&A sessions, study groups, and more. These resources will be announced here in the newsletter as well as posted to the website, so stay tuned!

With the successful launch of theYED mentorship program, we are excited to announce the next mentorship round is open. Our goal is to make this program available to as many CEE alumni as possible and pair recent alumni with experienced alumni to guide and help them develop in their areas of interest.

We ask that our mentors have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience for the benefit of our mentees. To enroll as a mentor, please fill out this Mentor Application.

To enroll as a mentee, please fill out this Mentee Application

Applications are due by February 15, 2021.  Should you have any questions, please contact our committee at uiuc.yed@gmail.com. We look forward to your participation.
