Area Studies Showcase Lecture Series: Theodora Dragostinova (Ohio State University), "The Cold War from the Margins: Socialist Bulgaria on the Global Cultural Scene"

Presenting Bulgaria’s cultural engagements with multiple actors in the Third World, this talk highlights the global reach of state socialism, demonstrates the existence of vibrant partnerships along an East-South axis during the 1970s, and challenges notions of late socialism as the prelude to communist collapse in eastern Europe.

Theodora Dragostinova is an Associate Professor of History at Ohio State University whose work focuses on nationalism, migration, global history, and Cold War culture. She is the author of Between Two Motherlands: Nationality and Emigration among the Greeks in Bulgaria, 1900-1949 (Cornell University Press, 2011) and coeditor of Beyond Mosque, Church, and State: Alternative Narratives of the Nation in the Balkans (CEU Press, 2016) and the thematic cluster, “Beyond the Iron Curtain: Eastern Europe and the Global Cold War,” Slavic Review (2018). Her most recent book, The Cold War from the Margins: A Small Socialist State on the Global Cultural Scene, is forthcoming by Cornell University Press in 2021.

Global Korea/CEAPS Speaker - Candace Epps-Robertson “BTS and ARMY: A Case Study of Transcultural Fan Activism and Accountability”

The global success and recognition of BTS, a seven-member South Korean music group, demonstrates that their artistry and message has captured the attention of millions. In addition to providing music and entertainment, BTS inspires their global fandom, ARMY, to engage in a myriad of actions connected to social issues. The combination of how BTS expresses this call to social action, and how the fan community receives and responds to this call, provides a rich case study of fan-based activism. While BTS and their fandom are pushing against and connecting across borders that often seem impermeable, this work does not happen with ease. In this presentation, Dr. Epps-Robertson will discuss the complexities of transcultural fan activism that involves both public-facing projects and teaching within the ARMY community about social issues.

Fiction in the Era of Post-Truth (EUC Fall Brown Bag Lecture Series)

In this Brown Bag lecture, Julie Gaillard, Assistant Professor of French, will speak about her book Réalités Pseudonymes (“pseudonymous realities”), published with Brill Rodopi in November 2019. This book explores the question of reality through the lens of the proper name and its referential mechanisms in French literature and arts at the turn of the 21st century, more specifically through the works of J.-F. Lyotard, S. Beckett, E. Levé, R. Cojo, and Invader. In analyzing how these thinkers, authors, and artists all question the referential transparency of the proper name in order to show how reality can be transformed, suspended, or even faked, this book aims at questioning the fabric of reality, at a time when societies are shifting from analog to digital modalities of its mediation.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program

Deadline to apply: December 18, 2020

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Each thematic seminar features educational lectures and interactive, cultural activities specifically designed for K-16 educators, including visits to local schools and organizations and meetings with education administrators, government officials, policymakers, teachers, and students. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new or to enhance cross-cultural curricula for use in their U.S. classrooms and school systems.

In 2021, summer programs will be offered in Iceland, Morocco, and Mexico. Each seminar will have 16 participants. The program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Teacher participants are responsible for a cost-share of $650.

GLBL 296: Seminar in Global Studies

Course for Spring 2021

This course considers the role of “global cultural governance” in the resolution as well as exacerbation of conflicts that occur because of heritage claims. These conflicts may be bloody and lethal, as when ethnic groups war with each other within a country or when countries attack each other over claims to a site that each considers as “their heritage.” Other conflicts may be vigorous but enacted through international lawsuits, for instance over objects in museums that each side professes to own. Thus, “global cultural governance” can be applied to European museums with artifacts from societies that were subjugated through colonialism. Moreover, “global cultural heritage governance” may be implicated in local contexts – as with current controversies over statues of people who were involved in historic events of global resonance. In this course, we consider a range of cases of cultural heritage conflicts and how they have been or might be or won’t be resolved.

Global Studies is an emerging and rapidly changing field. It is well on the way to becoming a new field of study among the major research universities in the United States and abroad. It is also more than a discipline. Today it is increasingly expected that holders of graduate degrees—whether professional degrees in Medicine, Law or Business, Masters or Ph.D.—also acquire an understanding of key global concepts and debates along with training in their primary disciplines. This course provides that much-needed analytical and methodological understanding.
