Issues of Loss

  • Brazil has big crop and not enough storage
    Brazil lacks 80 million tons of grain storage by standards of FAO recommendation, with current capacity estimated at 145 million tons and a harvest of 188 million tons. Though a major competitor in the global grain market, Brazil faces a great disadvantage in its lack of storage, leading to losses in the economic viability of harvests.

  • Wheat in Confed godowns devastated by rain, apathy
    Hundreds of quintals of wheat were damaged by heavy rains in the Jind district of Haryana, India, due to delays in lifting food grain by local procurement agency Confed. Sources say grains were stored with polythene waterproof covers for over two years, instead of one as is recommended for this storage method.

  • Water, food, and energy choke points in India (infographic)
    A science-focused journalism group covering world resources issues, Circle of Blue, attributes India's storage problem to a failure of bureaucratic policies. Subsidized water and electricity provided to grain farmers lead to massive surpluses the country cannot store, contributing to the waste of crops as well as energy and water.



  • Impressive adoption of metal silos in western Kenya
    A project called 'Effective Grain Storage for Sustainable Livelihoods of African Farmers' brings metal silo technology to farmers in Kenya. Coordinated by agricultural research centers KARI and CIMMYT, the project has seen widespread success in improving the livelihoods of farmers and tinsmiths.


  • FAO Statistical Yearbook 2013
    The Food and Agriculture Organization released its annual Statistical Yearbook for the year 2013. The Yearbook presents a visual synthesis of the major trends and factors shaping the global food and agriculture landscape, and aims to be a unique reference point on the state of food and agriculture policy.

  • The Ecological Footprint of Cassava and Maize Post-Harvest-Losses in Nigeria
    A German government enterprise, GIZ, published a report that focuses on the environmental impact of losses in the food supply chain. Using a life cycle assessment, the reports finds the environmental footprint to be large, and discusses categories of global warming potential, water footprint, and land occupation.

  • Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems
    The United Nations Sustainable Solutions Development Network engages various actors for evidence-based problem solving, and promotes initiatives that demonstrate the potential of technical and business innovation to support sustainable development. This draft report outlines perspectives on food and agriculture systems, including on loss prevention.


  • Focus on gender: women can help lower food losses
    Research on women and access to postharvest loss prevention methods is deemed important for further research. Women are essential to agricultural systems worldwide, and also commonly lack resources and knowledge on storage, processing, food safety, and tools for postharvest handling. 


  • Foodgrain storage: the numbers stack up, but quality goes for a toss
    An article in The New Indian Express questions the clarity of state principal actors involved in the implementation of the country's Food Security Act, specifically regarding the ability to store and transport food grains. Many questions and ambiguities remain among actors who call for a systematic and scientific approach.

  • Punjab's doublespeak on food security
    The Chief Minister and other high level politicians of Punjab, a state which contributes 50% of food grains to the Indian food system, are said to have criticized the national Food Security Act as a 'vote security ordinance', while at the same time claiming it to be a copy of Punjab's own scheme. This article's author denounces the politicization of schemes meant to preserve food and feed the poor.

With awareness growing around the world of the issue and impact of losses on the food chain, an outlet is needed for active dialogue on developing action steps and practical approaches for reducing loss.

The advanced information-sharing capabilities of the blog format brings postharvest loss reduction into the 21st century, where leveraging modern technologies and seeking innovations can develop methods and techniques necessary for the sustainable prevention of loss.
