Issues of Loss 

  • Food wastage in Cape Verde happens after harvesting
    Most "food wastage" in Cape Verde, an island country in the central Atlantic Ocean, occurs in postharvest stages, especially processing and packaging. The country lacks adequate postharvest facilities to support market needs. 

  • Bumper crop leads to grain storage issues
    Storage facilities in Saskatchewan, Canada have nearly filled with this year's bumper grain crop, though some claim storage capacity never meets demand, bumper crop or not. Some farmers have resorted to on-ground storage. 
  • Grain warehousing demand expected to grow in India
    Experts say that demand for grain warehousing in India will likely grow 5-6% in the next 5 years. Increased investment participation from the private sector, specifically large corporate entities, will be necessary to meet infrastructure demands, where the government is currently the majority owner.   


  • US to help UP minimize postharvest losses
    The United States and the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have agreed to address postharvest losses by aligning US support as well as collaboration between universities from both countries.

  • Marandagaham grain storage complex opened 
    The government of Sri Lanka opened a grain storage and trading complex at one of the country's leading wholesale paddy markets where 60,000 tons of grains can be stored. The complex is part of a government plan for increased food security and economic development in the country's agricultural sector. 

  • FCI to create additional 5.4 lakh tonnes of food grain storage capacity in NE
    The Food Corporation of India will create an additional 5.4 lakh tonnes of food grain capacity in the North Eastern States. Given the "strategic importance" of the region, the FCI has prepared a special package exclusively for the North East. 

  • Firm launches Sh8.7bn fund to stem postharvest losses
    A $100 million initiative called AgResults has been rolled out in Kenya to stem postharvest losses. The project will work with entrepreneurs with the financial capability to develop cost-effective storage facilities and distribute them to the farmers. The project is funded by the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
  • Afghanistan inaugurates first strategic grain reserve
    The World Food Programme and Afghan officials inaugurated the first Strategic Grain Reserve in the country. This important measure will protect food supplies against commonly faced natural disasters and help stabilize local wheat prices in times of shortage. Officials state that this is a first step in an initiative to develop and improve food system infrastructure.
  • Eyes on food security law, FCI's grains movement up by 30% 
    The movement of food grains by the Food Corporation of India across the country has gone up by 30% in the last quarter as compared to the corresponding period last year. Officials say that with the new food security law, efforts are being made to "optimize movement of food grains throughout the country." 


  • Using technology for India's food program
    States of India Chhattisgarh and Orissa are using technology to increase the efficiency of their food delivery systems in light of the food security law, standing out as models for other states on reducing supply chain losses. Innovative methods are being used including switching to an electronic database of beneficiaries, using SMS alerts to track and communicate grain movement, introducing an electronic device in ration shops that accepts smart cards, and others.

  • Company licenses storage system that deters insects
    Farmers in West and Central African nations could benefit economically, socially and nutritionally using a crop storage system developed by researchers at Purdue University and licensed to Kano-based Lela Agro Industries Nigeria Ltd. The PICS system uses special triple-bagging technology to protect cowpeas in storage against weevils, an invasive insect.


  • Food Losses and Food Waste in China (Full report)
    Researchers from Beijing Forest University performed a comprehensive review on available information on food loss and food waste in China. Results show 19% of grains are lost from field to fork.
  • Food Waste within Global Systems 
    This report was commissioned by the UK’s Global Food Security (GFS) programme to better understand the issues surrounding food waste in developing and developed countries, with a particular focus on understanding where new approaches and new research may be instrumental in reducing waste.



  • Of Indian food security
    A critic of the food security law debate argues the perspective that the idea behind and purpose of the bill is deserving of credit, even if the implementation will be a challenge. 

  • Minnesota workers share expertise across the globe
    A Minnesota-based non-profit, Partners in Food Solutions, provides business and technical training to farmers abroad by matching food processing industry volunteers with businesses in developing nations.
