Welcome back to Vienna!

Dear Illinois in Vienna alumni members,

Welcome to the first volume of the Illinois in Vienna alumni newsletter! Many of our alumni members will still know the program by its former name: the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program (AIEP), which was changed to the Illinois in Vienna Programs (IiVP) in 2017. As an Illinois student who participated in the IiVP / AIEP between its conception in 1972 and 2020, I am delighted to be the first person to tell you herzlich willkommen to the Illinois in Vienna alumni network! This network will allow alumni members to reconnect with Vienna, fellow students, and instructors through quarterly newsletters and alumni events, such as our inaugural Illinois in Vienna Alumni Reunion and Networking Event on June 19, 2021, at 10 a.m. CST.

What’s new with the Illinois in Vienna Programs?

You may be surprised to learn that the Illinois in Vienna Programs (IiVP) have expanded significantly over the years. We now offer seven academic exchange programs for students across the University of Illinois, who can take coursework at four Viennese partner universities. We are grateful that the program’s office and its Core Courses are hosted by the Vienna University of Economics and Business, which completed its new campus in 2013.

The longstanding director of the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program, Professor Bruce Murray, retired in 2017, at which time Dr. Alexandra Pfefferle became the resident director of the program. Kyle Schmude and Evita Nitsch are program coordinators and lecturers in the program.

Dear Illinois in Vienna Alumni & Freunde,

While COVID-19 has paused regular student exchange, the pandemic also enabled us to develop innovative formats, such as Virtual Global Experiences and Global Online Courses. In the post-COVID future, I envision even more productive hybrid international education formats. Ideally, students will work before, during, and after studying abroad with IiVP instructors, alumni, and locals – both offline and online.

On a more personal note, my husband and I welcomed our second daughter, Valerie, on March 17, 2021. My current maternity leave has also given me time to reflect on your invaluable commitment. Some alumni have generously offered their expertise and time to students in workshops, talks, lectures, Virtual Global Experiences, and internships.

I am looking forward to exchanging more ideas with you at our virtual Alumni Reunion and Networking Event on June 19, 2021 at 10 a.m. CST! And please let me know whenever you find yourself in Vienna. Perhaps we can soon meet again at a picturesque “Heurigen”.

In the meantime, stay healthy and “alles Gute”!

Herzliche Grüße
Alexandra Pfefferle

Vernal Greetings from Vienna!

After a painful year with the pandemic, our Frühlingsgefühle are mixed. Looking ahead, we are hopeful. Sticking close to home, Renee and I have become capable coronavirus copers. We now know almost every nook and cranny of the Wienerwald in and around Neuwaldegg. Very recently, I joined the Greens of our district, striving to be a better steward of our environment.

Six Illinois students and I also are learning about the European Green Deal in our Virtual Global Experience. Our goal is to identify best practices, holding the potential to serve as global tipping points. Take a look at our final report in the Illinois EUC blog here!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Bruce Murray

Our Illinois in Vienna Alumni Network

We are so happy to reconnect with students who have studied with us in Vienna – and we strive to create a community in which our alumni members have the opportunity to experience the magic of Vienna all over again. This network is ours to create and we look forward to reminiscing with you on your time in Vienna, while looking to a future filled with new perspectives and collaboration opportunities between Illinois in Vienna alumni and current students. It is our pleasure to invite you to our first Illinois in Vienna alumni reunion and networking event on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 10 a.m. CST / 11 a.m. EST / 5 p.m. CET via Zoom. We hope to see you at this event and request that you register here by June 12! You can stay up-to-date on the Illinois in Vienna Alumni Network and learn about ways to support the program here!
