A Letter from the Director of The Project for Middle Class Renewal

The Project for Middle Class Renewal (PMCR) at the University of Illinois is a policy-based research unit within the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

PMCR’s mission is to develop and secure practices and policies that promote middle-class paying jobs, equitable workplaces and protect the employment rights of all workers.

Since PMCR’s inception in 2015, we have produced over 100 high quality studies on employment and public policy solutions to expand access to a middle class standard of living.  A brief sample of recent work that triggered policy discussion and got extensive media coverage includes the following: “The Impact of Enacting a Progressive Income Tax in Illinois,” “The Effects of the Global Pandemic on Illinois Workers,” “Implementing a Work-Share Program in Illinois,” “Enacting Paid Sick Leave in Illinois,” “The Apprenticeship Alternative,” “The Regional Impacts of a $15 Minimum Wage in Illinois: Estimates For Six Regions,” “A Pension Crisis” Mentality Won’t Help: Thinking Differently about Illinois’ Retirement Systems,”  and “The Financial Impact Of Legalizing Marijuana In Illinois.”

Due to the public health crisis we did not hold a fund raising event last year.  However, our ability to generate a high level of scholarly production and to hire researchers is dependent on your generous support for PMCR.

Therefore, on October 8 we invite you to join in a live virtual reception to show your support for PMCR and to discuss issues paramount to organized labor as it responds to economic challenges and a global pandemic.
