Dear UIC Language Student:

Got homework questions? If you have 15 minutes, check the Spanish, French, Italian, or German schedule and drop in to talk with a peer tutor. Four more weeks of classes: end the semester strong!

Spring fever? Visit LCLC Peer Tutoring Instagram to dream about real or virtual trips to Angel Falls in Venezuela, a German hit song written by chimpanzees, #metoo in France (#balancetonporc), and the Italian Street Fest in June in Chicago.

It’s time to register for your next language class! In 101, 102, 103? Register for the next level, and tell your friends to join you!

Finishing 104? Continue to a 200-level class in Italian, German, French, or Spanish AND apply to take the 1-credit Peer Tutoring Apprentice class in Fall 2021: join us! Here’s the very short application (and see below too).

What languages do you speak and learn? Put yourself on the LCLC UIC Language Map with this very short form. Our map celebrates the linguistic richness of the UIC community, and you can watch it grow day by day as students, faculty, and staff represent the many languages of UIC.

Paola, German Peer Tutor

Meet Paola, one of our German peer tutors!

Hallo! I am a computer science major in my third year at UIC. I used to live on campus at JST and later TBH, but now I am living back home due to the pandemic. I fell in love with German in high school and think it’s an amazing language to learn. I started with GER 102 at UIC and am familiar with the textbooks and curriculum of the courses. As Spanish is my first language, I have experience in the difficulties of learning a different language and picked up tips to help along the way. I hope to help other students enjoy the language as much as I do and show that learning a different language can be really fun.

3.17.21 - Lainey on Latin American Punk Rock

"In the late 1980s and early 1990s, punk exploded across Latin America, most notably in Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, and especially Peru. Latino Punk songs often featured lyrics that described the political issues facing Latin Americans. These issues included the rise of dictatorship in certain Latin American countries, poverty, political oppression, discrimination, immigration, and the abuse of immigrant workers."

German Phrase of the Day

Today’s German phrase of the day is „Danke für die Blumen“ which is literally translated to “Thank you for the flowers." In English, this might be a response to a back-handed compliment.
