Two new faculty members join the ABE department  
Two new outstanding faculty members joined the ABE department in July 2020: Cody Allen and Mohammed Kamruzzaman. Allen is assistant professor in off-road equipment engineering. Kamruzzaman is assistant professor in sustainable bioprocessing. The department is excited to welcome both outstanding scholars. They will undoubtedly make significant contributions to our teaching and research programs in off-road equipment engineering and bioprocessing. READ MORE 


Four ABE faculty promoted to associate professor with tenure
Four outstanding ABE faculty have been promoted to associate professor and granted indefinite tenure effective August 2020: Rabin Bhattarai, Maria Chu, Girish Chowdhary, and Paul Davidson. Promotion to associate professor with tenure is a distinct honor reserved for faculty members who have made contributions of an appropriate magnitude and quality in research, teaching, and service, and have demonstrated a high likelihood of sustaining contributions to the field and to the department. Richard Cooke receives Fulbright grant for rice productivity research in Sierra Leone
Richard Cooke, professor of agricultural and biological engineering at the University of Illinois, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award for the 2020-2021 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Cooke will conduct research on rice productivity with faculty and graduate students from several departments at Njala University in Sierra Leone. READ MORE

U of I receives funding to create, expand mental health resource network for farmers
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded nearly $7.2 million for the North Central Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Center (NCFRSAC), a 12-state collaborative that will create and expand stress management and mental health resources and services to agricultural producers and stakeholders in the North Central region. The project is led by Josie Rudolphi, assistant professor in agricultural and biological engineering. READ MORE


Appropriate-Scale Mechanization Consortium for Sustainable Intensification
The Appropriate Scale Mechanization Consortium (ASMC), hosted in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Illinois, received a $2.25 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to continue work on empowering smallholder farmers in West Africa and Asia through sustainable mechanization. The ASMC, led by Prasanta Kalita, is a multi-university effort with collaborators at U of I, Michigan State, Kansas State and North Carolina A&T State. READ MORE

Center for Digital Agriculture at Illinois receives $20M to develop new AIFARMS institute
The National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes awarded $20 million to the Center for Digital Agriculture for the new Artificial Intelligence for Future Agricultural Resilience, Management, and Sustainability (AIFARMS) institute. The project team includes Girish Chowdhary and Angela Green-Miller, both associate professors in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. READ MORE


AgrAbility celebrates 30th anniversary
Illinois AgrAbility acknowledged 30 years of service to Illinois agricultural producers with a virtual Anniversary Celebration on September 29, 2020. Since 1990, Illinois AgrAbility has provided direct services to over 800 farmers with physical limitations and disabilities and provided education about assistive technologies and referrals to another 1200 producers.
