Laurie, French Tutor

I am a transfer student at UIC majoring in Biological Sciences. I’ve had to learn four languages, so I know from experience how challenging it is to learn a new language, how awkward it can be to pronounce certain words, or how uncomfortable and uncertain we feel when we speak a new language. I want to share with UIC students my strategies for language learning.

Peer tutor Juan on his multilingual experience

Spanish peer tutor Juan shares about his linguistic and cultural experiences as a speaker (and student) of Spanish and English in Chicago: "Growing up, my family from Mexico have always told me that I’m too 'gringo' and that my Spanish is broken. Meanwhile, my friends in the United States have told me that I have an accent when speaking English. I’ve always been self conscious about the way I pronounce words.  Nevertheless, I didn’t let this bother me, and now I’m more confident when speaking in front of both family and friends."

Komm schon, spring über deinen Schatten!
Komm schon, spring über deinen Schatten!

German phrase of the day
: “Komm schon, spring über deinen Schatten.” This literally means “Come on, jump over your shadow”: in English, we would say, “Get out of your comfort zone.”  It’s a good reminder for all of us to try something out of our comfort zone every now and then!
