A message from department chair Jeremy Tyson

Dear Colleagues,

Spring and winter images from Jeremy Tyson's home work space.

My best wishes to all of you at the end of this challenging semester and this remarkable year. Back in March, could any of us have predicted that we would be where we are now? I have been thinking back often to those early, whirlwind weeks, full of shutdowns, health and safety warnings, and a rapid reconfiguration of every aspect of our lives and our work.

In reflecting over the past 12 months, I am struck by some remarkable contrasts.

  • A year full of transformational changes in health, social and interpersonal interaction, politics, and science, which we all witnessed, day in and day out, from our living rooms and kitchens.
  • A time of enforced physical separation from our coworkers, colleagues, friends, and family, yet in some ways we as a department came closer together than ever before.
  • Despite ongoing uncertainty, some things remained unchanged. I am grateful to the University for its continued strong support for the Altgeld and Illini Halls building project, and I look forward to the day when we will gather to celebrate the opening of our newly renovated buildings.

Throughout this year, I have been encouraged by your dedication, your creativity, and your resilience. Thank you all, again. I am proud to be your colleague and a member of this department, and I look forward to what we can and will accomplish in 2021.

Best,

Jeremy Tyson signature
