LIBRARY TIP OF THE MONTH - MAY

Using the Library Over the Summer

It certainly has been an unusual year at Illinois. Although the campus is quieter than usual, scholarship never sleeps! Here are some tips for using the Library over the summer.

While away from campus, you can still access our online collections through the Library’s website at library.illinois.edu. Access e-content using Virtual Private Networking (VPN), the Library's proxy bookmarklet, or by configuring your Google Scholar settings.

You can use the DocExpress service to request digital copies of articles or chapters from the print collections. This service is free for faculty, staff, and graduate students.

At this time, in keeping with campus building access guidelines, campus libraries will begin to gradually add services and reopen to members of the campus community over the summer. However, please visit the Library's website for the most up-to-date information. The COVID-19 Response page will have current information about the Library's efforts and services.

If you are planning to visit a research library elsewhere this summer, we recommend contacting that library ahead of time to ascertain if they are open to the public and what privileges they’ll extend to you. Some libraries ask for letters of reference from your home library. If you need such a letter, please contact Central Access Services.

Get an early start on planning your classes for the fall semester:

Summer is also a great time to get help moving your research forward with the Scholarly Commons. Schedule a virtual consultation with an expert. And, when the Scholarly Commons is open to the public, stop in to use specialized software and equipment or learn a new tool using the workbooks and manuals in the Scholarly Commons reference collection. We recommend that you visit www.library.illinois.edu/sc for hours and services.

The Illinois Open Publishing Network is a network of publications and publishing initiatives hosted and coordinated at the Library that aims to facilitate the dissemination of high-quality, open access scholarship by scholars at Illinois and beyond. Learn more at iopn.library.illinois.edu.

Have a great summer!
