While things may look a little different this semester, we’re glad to have so many of our #ActiveILLINI back on campus! Here in Campus Recreation, we remain committed to providing opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and community patrons to access the wellness resources they need to thrive. We appreciate the flexibility and patience of our wonderful participants and dedicated instructors as we navigate our safe return to group fitness.

Labor Day at Campus Rec
 
 

The ARC will be open from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Labor Day. 

In order to continue to access the ARC following the Labor Day weekend, please ensure building status compliance by testing on Thursday, 9/3,  Friday, 9/4,  Saturday, 9/5 or Sunday, 9/6.  Some testing sites will be open on Labor Day as well.

FALL GROUP FITNESS UPDATES
 
 

In accordance with the guidance recently issued by the Chancellor, Campus Recreation will be suspending all in-person group fitness classes (both indoor and outdoor) until September 18 to protect the health of our instructors and participants.

In order to continue to serve the group fitness community at this time, some in-person class offerings will be transitioning to a virtual format. All existing virtual classes will continue without interruption after Labor Day (September 7th). You can access the full virtual group fitness schedule here. Please keep in mind that all virtual classes require a reservation in order to access the zoom link. Reservations should be made between 72 and 24 hours in advance to allow for enough time to obtain the class zoom link.

As we work to expand our virtual group fitness offerings, we are pleased to offer a virtual group fitness pass option, which will provide unlimited access to all virtual group fitness classes during the fall semester. This pass will cost $10 for Campus Rec members, and $20 for non-members, and can be purchased online by following the steps listed below:

Instructions for registering for virtual group fitness classes:

  1. Access the group fitness schedule and select the class for which you’d like to register. Click on the ‘Enroll’ button.
  2. If you haven’t already purchased a group fitness pass, you will be prompted to complete a “series sale” to purchase you virtual group fitness pass.
  3. Select your membership option and pay online, which will allow you to enroll immediately and obtain the zoom link.

WEEKLY WELLNESS: FUTURE’S SO BRIGHT 5K GOES VIRTUAL!
 
 

 
 

Are you looking to maintain a sense of togetherness and connection while practicing safe social and physical distancing? While the weather cooperates, was it your hope to develop good exercise habits in the great outdoors?

We are thrilled to bring you the, “Future’s So Bright 5K Virtual Race”. The best way to start is to set a goal! Register with friends to complete our virtual race by October 23 and join our intramural running league to stay accountable with your training. Each week Campus Rec will provide runner education over our Instagram account and Illinois students will highlight their favorite spots to walk and run on or around campus.

It’s September and the pumpkin-spice season has already arrived! Whether you love all things pumpkin-spice, or roll your eyes at this seasonal trend, there’s no denying that the pumpkin-spice combination packs a nutritional punch. Pumpkin gets its orange color from beta carotene, an antioxidant that gets converted into vitamin A by the body and is known to maintain vision, promote healthy skin, and support the immune system. And the spices commonly paired with pumpkin – cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice – have their own health benefits.

Skip the coffee shop and use this homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe so you can enjoy the warm flavors of the fall anytime you want! Bonus: when you make it yourself, it’s easier to control the sweetness of your PSL and make this an even more nutritious treat.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

Ingredients 

  • 1½ tablespoons sugar (substitute honey)
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • ½ cup (4 oz) brewed coffee
  • ½ cup (4oz) milk or milk substitute

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and stir to combine.
  2. Over medium heat, bring the ingredients to a simmer.
  3. Take the saucepan off the heat and pour into your mug.
  4. Decorate with freshly whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon. Enjoy!
