Illinois BOT approves schematic designs

At yesterday's May board meeting, the Board of Trustees at the University of Illinois approved the schematic designs for our Altgeld and Illini Hall Project, moving us to the next phase of modernizing and growing spaces devoted to data science and other mathematical sciences.

Be on the lookout for the official announcement of this exciting news from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences next week.

Record new student acceptance numbers

We don't know what the fall semester will look like, but Undergraduate Admissions was very successful in getting students to accept offers of admission for fall: 201 freshmen in Mathematics, 67 freshmen in Actuarial Science, and 42 Mathematics & Computer Science freshmen have accepted. We have 65 Mathematics transfer students and 13 Actuarial Science transfer students who have accepted so far. Freshmen had a May 1 accept deadline, while transfer accepts are ongoing; another 40+ transfers could still say yes.

Ernesto Machado, assisted by grad students Emily Shinkle and Marissa Miller, will help these 300 freshmen select and register for fall classes, while AJ Schmidt and Alison Champion will work with the transfer students. All of summer registration is online this year; fortunately, we have much experience with online summer registration advising already.

AJ Schmidt promotion

We congratulate AJ Schmidt on his promotion from academic programs specialist to academic programs coordinator. This promotion recognizes the large responsibilities AJ has taken over on behalf of the Actuarial Science Program, his excellence in working with prospective students and their families, and the expertise in data analysis and advising he has gained in his five years with us.

Staci Walker departure

Staci Walker accepted a promotion to office manager in the Office of Student Conflict Resolution, effective May 4. We are happy for her but sad for us, and wish Staci well. While a search for her replacement takes place, Mark Drennan, Jane Bergman, and Paula Luesse are helping Kay Daly handle phone calls, process student forms, maintain Undergraduate Director Sue Tolman's calendar, and use BANNER administrative apps to serve our students, faculty, and staff.

STUDENT RESEARCH & OUTREACH

The Illinois Risk Lab (IRisk Lab) accomplished a lot this academic year:

This year's Summer Illinois Math Camp is going virtual! Registration for SIM Camp Delta, which will be held June 8-12, is still open; registration for SIM Camp Epsilon, June 22-26, is full and accepting waitlist applicants. For descriptions of this year's sessions and to learn more, view the 2020 brochure.

Nancy Anderson, librarian for the Department of Mathematics for 32 years, passed away on May 12, 2020. During her tenure, the mathematics collection more than doubled to nearly 100,000 volumes and was recognized as one of the preeminent research mathematics collections worldwide.
