 APA-ISS

The American Planning Association (APA) Illinois State Section (APA-ISS) will host the 2021 APA-ISS Spring Conference, which includes two days of sessions in a fully virtual format, as well as opportunities to connect with planning professionals across the state. The conference will feature Zoomtowns: Creating 21st Century Boomtowns, presented by Molly Hammond and Chris Collins of USDA. Molly and Chris will discuss resources and programs designed to help rural communities address their infrastructure needs to promote remote workforce population attraction. Jonathan Weyer from Hillsboro will discuss his community’s efforts to attract remote workers to Hillsboro, population 6400. Registration is required.

Crowdfunding

Illinois Extension will provide a webinar on crowdfunding April 22 at 11 a.m. Crowdfunding is a powerful tool for accessing capital to finance business start-ups and expand existing businesses. Participants will learn about the three types of crowdfunding – donation, reward and equity; as well as how to plan, organize and market a successful campaign. This webinar will be of interest to community leaders, non-profits, entrepreneurs, artists and community volunteers interested in building community with crowdfunding. “According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, during the course of the pandemic, personal saving rates in the US have soared from 11% of personal income to 20.5%,” says Extension Specialist Pam Schallhorn. “What better time to start a crowdfunding campaign and give people the opportunity to invest in projects that they feel good about while building much needed community amenities and resources.” This webinar will be recorded, and the link provided to all who register.

 Pandemic Assistance

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced the availability of $2 million to establish partnerships with organizations to provide outreach and technical assistance to socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. The funding was made possible by USDA’s new Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative, an effort to distribute resources more broadly and to put greater emphasis on outreach to small and socially disadvantaged producers impacted by the pandemic. FSA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 (CFAP 2) signup has reopened. Farmers and ranchers will have at least 60 days to apply or make modifications to existing CFAP 2 applications. The cooperative agreements will support participation in programs offered by FSA, including those that are part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative. Proposals are due May 5, 2021.

LGE Webinar Series

After the 2020 census, Illinois, and every other state, creates new electoral maps, redrawing district lines for state legislators. States with more than one US Representative likewise revise their congressional district maps, using a variety of legislative procedures. In a parallel process, Illinois counties redraw their district boundaries as well. On April 20, at Noon CT, Illinois Extension’s Local Government Education program will welcome Christopher Mooney, professor of political science at the University of Illinois Chicago and Director of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, Brian Gaines, professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Michael McDonald, professor of political science at the University of Florida. Redistricting Process: The Political Future of Illinois will discuss the redistricting process, and recent history in Illinois with some attention to each level of government and some discussion of anomalies in 2020, given the delayed release of census data. This hour-long webinar concludes with a Q and A. For more information and registration, visit here.
