FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to summer!

Finals are over, Commencement ceremonies have been completed and the summer term has begun.  Most students have returned home giving us the chance to slow down, catch our breath and prepare for the beginning of the next academic year when the cycle will begin again.

June is also the last month of The Secretariat’s 2015-2016 year and my term as President will soon end.  It has been a complete honor to have been chosen for this leadership role in such a highly respected and well-known organization. The main goals of The Secretariat are to provide opportunities that contribute to the membership’s professional development and to provide ways to build working relationships across campus through events such as the monthly luncheon.  The officer roles and committee chair positions for The Secretariat give our members another way to develop their leadership skills and expand their knowledge of how an organization functions. I am grateful to have been given the chance to expand my own skills in the role of President and previously as the Recording Secretary and President Elect.  I have developed new skills and established many new working relationships through my various roles on the Executive Board.  And it is because of my own experiences that I encourage you to consider joining a committee in the upcoming year. Being part of a committee - a team working towards a similar goal - is a great way to learn and to establish relationships across the campus. The time commitments for committees is minimal, but the rewards you will receive are great!

Congratulations to our newly elected officers – Angie Wisehart (President Elect), Terri Daniels (Recording Secretary), Jill Odom (Treasurer).  They join Penny Nigh, President, as members of the 2016-2017 Secretariat Executive Board and officially begin their duties on July 1. I look forward to the next twelve months with each of them on the Executive Board. 

June’s luncheon is when we recognize past President’s, outgoing Officers, the current Committee Chairs and new or soon-to-be retirees.  It is also when the 2016 Secretariat Member of the Year is announced.  Registration information for the Wednesday, June 15 luncheon is below in the Programs and Reservation section.

I hope that you have enjoyed your Secretariat membership this year! The Secretariat Board is always looking ahead and working to enhance what is presented to the membership.  Please continue to send your feedback and share ideas.  Feedback from members is part of what helps makes The Secretariat such a great organization!

SCHOLARSHIP

The winner of the 2016-2017 Kathryn G. Hansen Scholarship is Alexander Martin.  Alexander is from Bethany, Illinois and is a senior at Okaw Valley High School.  Alexander will be attending the University of Illinois and pursuing a major in actuarial science in the College of LAS.  Alexander wants his education at the University of Illinois to provide him versatility in this modern world of business and will also be exploring majors in accountancy and finance as well. We will invite Alexander to a Secretariat luncheon this Fall and look forward to hearing more from him.

I want to thank my committee for their time and commitment to this very important endeavor.

NOMINATIONS/ELECTIONS

After an exciting day of voting at the May General Meeting Luncheon, we have The Secretariat Officers for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

A big thank you goes out to our other nominees for Recroding Secretary:  Donna Miller and Debbie Schoonover.  It was a virtual tie after the first vote.  A second vote was needed to narrow the field down to two nominees, with a third vote deciding a winner.  How exciting!

Legacy of Leadership

Long-time committee chair Rob Chappell recently announced he would need to step down as the committee’s chair. Rob’s contributions and faithful service on the Secretariat Board have been and will continue to be missed.  He has been responsible for the direction and vision of this committee for many years.  The Secretariat and its membership has been served well. On behalf of the Secretariat Executive Board, I wish to thank Rob for his devotion to the organization and its members.
