Uplink: for the faculty, staff, and students of the Coordinated Science Laboratory
August Schiess, CSL
CSL Professors Tamer Basar and Gary Eden

The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced its initial selection of 21 advanced science and engineering research projects for its FY16 DoD Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI). Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are included as principal investigators (PIs) or co-PIs in a third of the projects proposed by the nation’s top research institutions.

Two of those projects, which total $15 million, include CSL Professors Gary Eden and Tamer Ba┼čar. Read more.

Romit Roy Choudhury
Julia Sullivan, ECE

CSL Associate Professor Romit Roy Choudhury (ECE) and ECE PhD Candidate Nirupam Roy knew that vibrating objects generally respond to air vibrations, so it stood to reason that the vibration motor in a smartphone could act as a microphone. They made an unexpected discovery when they came to understand that the output of these vibra-motors needed only basic signal processing to recognize the words and phrases. The two have published their findings in a paper, "Listening through a Vibration Motor." Read more.

sushi recognition software
August Schiess, CSL

Advanced image recognition research from the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC) has found an unusual testbed: a sushi buffet.

As pieces of sushi rush along a conveyor belt in Sushi Express in Singapore, an image recognition system quickly identifies each sushi roll and tallies the number of pieces per category. It helps employees know when they are running low on smoked salmon rolls, for example, and need to add more to the conveyor. Read more.

 Grace Gao
Katie Carr, CSL

CSL Assistant Professor Grace Xingxin Gao has received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Illinois Chapter’s 2016 Teacher of the Year award.

Gao, a member of Illinois' aerospace engineering faculty, is no stranger to teaching awards. In her three years at Illinois, she has received the 2015 Illinois College of Engineering Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence and was included on the Illinois List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students in 2014 and 2015.
