FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of The Secretariat, it brings me great joy to welcome our new and returning members to the 2016-17 academic year. We are thrilled to have you with us, and we are excited to help nurture your strengths, encourage your personal growth, and inspire your creativity by providing fellowship and professional development opportunities. As your President this year, I will lead The Secretariat to the best of my abilities; however, this is a team effort and I will be counting on all of you to help make it a successful year!

I know this past year has been difficult for many of us, and the upcoming year (so far) seems as if it will be just as challenging. However, I am motivated by an interview that our founder, Kathryn G. Hansen, once gave and how our problems today seem pale in comparison to the difficult times she endured during the depression and World War II. I’m inspired by her will and tenacity to overcome her obstacles so others may benefit from her knowledge and expertise.  I encourage all of you to challenge yourselves this year, try something new, something that you think you’d enjoy but have been too scared to take that step. You’ve already joined The Secretariat, now ask yourself “What do I want from this group,” “What expertise do I have that I can share with my peers.” There are many opportunities here, you just have to take that first step!

The July 20 luncheon will be an excellent opportunity to take that step! We will give an overview of each committee and review their goals, discuss the proposed and planned events for the upcoming year, and to loosen everyone up, we will start with a fun-filled ice-breaker activity!  Additional members and/or chairs are still needed for committees, I encourage you to come learn more about them and meet your peers! Our organization’s ability to serve its members is directly influenced by the participation level and the teamwork involved within each of these committees.  Without them, our group would not thrive or be able to provide as many opportunities to its members. We recognized and thanked committee chairs and committee members at the June luncheon for the outstanding work each of them performed during the 2015-2016 year.  Each of them deserve a huge round of applause for their commitment to The Secretariat and the great examples of teamwork they provide to present and future committee members.

Lastly, I would like to thank Andrèa Fain for her outstanding leadership as the President during the 2015-2016 year.  Your commitment to upholding The Secretariat by-laws and dedication to its members has been truly amazing and appreciated! I am honored to follow in your footsteps!  Congratulations on your successful year and thank you from all of us!
